Announcing Momtaza Mehri on the Sunday Times Young Writer of the Year Award

The Sunday times young writer of the year award is the most influential prize for young writers in the UK and Ireland and has officially announced its shortlist of authors, described by judge James McConnachie as four ‘books that believe in the possibility of change.’

One of the authors chosen is Momtaza Mehri who's exhilarating debut collection spans the waves of movement to and from Somalia during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries- Mogadishu to Naples and Lampedusa to London. She confronts the ambivalent nature of speaking for those who cannot do so and attempts to transcend their cliched angst through essential poems about our diasporic age.

Momtaza Mehri is an award winning poet and essayist and winner of the 2019 Manchester Writing Prize. Her writing has featured in The Guardian, POETRY, Granta, Wasafiri, Biduon, the White Review and on BBC Radio 4
