We're delighted to be partnering with our friends at the wonderful Durham Book Festival to present this Poetry Book Society Showcase featuring three thrilling new voices on the poetry scene: Bhanu Kapil, Rachel Long and Nina Mingya Powles. Join us for a thought-provoking lunch hour of cross-continental and multi-lingual poetry with a trio of PBS poets who fearlessly tackle gender identity, diaspora and displacement.
Recently returned from living in the US, British-Indian poet Bhanu Kapil took the poetry world by storm with How to Wash a Heart, the PBS Summer Choice – a breath-taking collection which dissects migration, performance, racism and the guest-host dynamic.
Nina Mingya Powles is a writer and zinemaker from Aotearoa New Zealand, of Malaysian-Chinese heritage. An Autumn PBS recommendation and shortlisted for the Forward Prize, her debut Magnolia, 木蘭 draws on memories of Shanghai to conjure mouth-watering poems about food, language and “mixed race girlhood”.
Founder of the Octavia Poetry Collective for Womxn of Colour, Rachel Long brings warmth and humour to tales of adolescence, family and faith. Her debut My Darling From the Lions, also a PBS Recommendation and shortlisted for the Forward Prize, is a razor-sharp laugh-out-loud examination of growing up Black British.
These are three poets who speak to the current moment with their fingers firmly on the pulse – defiant, blazing and deeply entertaining.
