Hartsongs is a heart rending collection of work from an award winning poet, which commemorates the life and mourns the death of a dearly loved nephew, and the effect this has on a family. Dr Matthews has always been a poet who experiments and invents form, and these sequences, inspired by her doctoral research into the 8th Century calligraphy text by Yan Zhenqing The draft of a requiem for a nephew, are no exception.  Precise, tender, and beautifully crafted, the poems chime out the pain and universality of loss.
