Late Sketches & Studies By Tony Towle
The fourteenth collection from acclaimed New York School poet Tony Towle, 'Late Sketches & Studies' is a study on time, New York life and the influence of the city's culture, politics, architecture and art world on the individual. The poems are filled with a meditative imagination, bound up with a humorous and self-aware narrative voice which moves the reader with a deft sense of play with language. Filled with wit and meaning, it is a culmination of Towle's dedication to a lifetime of poetic work and his first release in eight years.
Tony Towle was born in Manhattan in 1939, and grew up in Queens and Westchester (the county bordering the city to the north). He has lived in Manhattan since 1961, at present with actress Diane Tyler. He has two grown children, Scott and Rachel. Towle began writing poetry in 1960, "out of the blue," as he puts it. Early on, he was drawn to the New York School poets, and established an early association in 1963, when he took poetry workshops at the New School (now New School University) with Kenneth Koch and Frank O'Hara.
